To\u00adday I spoke to Ka\u00adrin Pat\u00adton about Dun\u00adstan Baby Lan\u00adguage. Lis\u00adtening to Ka\u00adrin was truly a treat as she is one of these wo\u00admen that have end\u00adless power. She star\u00adted her career as a nurse and ad\u00added many other jobs along the way. To\u00adday she works as part-time as nurse (in times when thes shortage is sim\u00adply too big), owns a beer bre\u00adwery, and te\u00ada\u00adches par\u00adents to un\u00adder\u00adstand their babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our dis\u00adcus\u00adsion ob\u00adviously was mainly around the Baby Lan\u00adguage. Ka\u00adrin took the time to ex\u00adplain the con\u00adcept of Dun\u00adstan Baby lan\u00adguage and the work\u00adshop she is of\u00adfe\u00adring. There she te\u00ada\u00adches about to be par\u00adents to un\u00adder\u00adstand the sounds of their baby and to re\u00adspond accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first re\u00adac\u00adtion to Dun\u00adstan was: Never he\u00adard! I have to ad\u00admit I did not read all the books, but one or two even I came across. Dun\u00adstan Baby Lan\u00adguage un\u00adfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely was not one of them. I am more sorry about this fact the more I learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental checklist becomes obsolete<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Af\u00adter we came home from the hos\u00adpi\u00adtal, we au\u00adto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally went th\u00adrough the men\u00adtal check\u00adlist every time our daugh\u00adter star\u00adted to cry: 1. is she hun\u00adgry? 2. new dia\u00adper? 3. tired? \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ka\u00adrin who li\u00adves with her hus\u00adband and two boys of 11 and 14 ex\u00adplain that there is also an\u00ado\u00adther way than the check\u00adlist. Dun\u00adstan Baby Lan\u00adguage was de\u00adve\u00adlo\u00adped by the Aus\u00adtra\u00adlian Pri\u00adscilla Dun\u00adstan. As a trai\u00adned opera sin\u00adger with ab\u00adso\u00adlute pitch, she re\u00adco\u00adgni\u00adzed the sounds and her fa\u00adther, a pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of early child de\u00adve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment, was able to sup\u00adport the dis\u00adco\u00advery with sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic re\u00adse\u00adarch. Fi\u00adnally, Dun\u00adstan Baby Lan\u00adguage be\u00adcame known glo\u00adbally with her ap\u00adpearance on Op\u00adrah Win\u00adfrey<\/a> in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 reflexive sounds indicate the need of the child<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Every child, no mat\u00adter what con\u00adti\u00adnent they are born, makes the same 5 re\u00adflex sounds in re\u00adsponse to their needs at that spe\u00adci\u00adfic mo\u00adment. Most of the time, child\u00adren un\u00adlearn these re\u00adfle\u00adxes af\u00adter four months, espe\u00adci\u00adally if the par\u00adents do not re\u00adspond to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To avoid that, Ka\u00adrin pre\u00adfers to teach par\u00adents be\u00adfore the baby ar\u00adri\u00adves. This way, start\u00ading at day 1, the par\u00adents have a chance to be\u00adgin com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adting with their baby. Du\u00adring the work\u00adshops, Ka\u00adrin in\u00adten\u00adsi\u00advely trains the new par\u00adents to re\u00adco\u00adg\u00adnise the five sounds. You mus con\u00adcen\u00adtrate to re\u00adco\u00adg\u00adnise the dif\u00adfe\u00adrence, espe\u00adci\u00adally in the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next to re\u00adco\u00adg\u00adnis\u00ading the cries, Ka\u00adrin makes an ef\u00adfort to ex\u00adplain the new par\u00adents how to re\u00adspond. It is im\u00adportant to un\u00adder\u00adstand that to 4 out of 5 cries, a fa\u00adther can re\u00adspond to equally com\u00adpe\u00adtent than a mo\u00adther. This know\u00adledge will have a si\u00adgni\u00adfi\u00adcant im\u00adpact on the mother\u2019s re\u00adco\u00advery time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most va\u00adluable aspect for new par\u00adents, Ka\u00adrin ex\u00adplains, is the fact that they can un\u00adder\u00adstand what the child needs be\u00adfore it has to start crying. On average, a baby in\u00addi\u00adca\u00adtes 30 mi\u00adnu\u00adtes in ad\u00advance when it is ti\u00adred with the help of the \u201cti\u00adred\u201d cry. This way, new par\u00adents, do not have to wait un\u00adtil the baby is show\u00ading other si\u00adgns, such as rub\u00adbing their eyes, to com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcate to their par\u00adents that they are tried and want to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understand the baby\u2019s needs before it start crying<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you then put the baby down, it will not yet be over\u00adti\u00adred and you aill have a ea\u00adsier time get\u00adting it to sleep. Ka\u00adrin sta\u00adtes: \u201cIt is re\u00adally funny to see that the childs cha\u00adrac\u00adter can al\u00adre\u00adady be de\u00adfi\u00adned in these days. There are some that ex\u00adplain very carefully and pa\u00adtio\u00adnally to their par\u00adents and other start to cry al\u00adre\u00adady af\u00adter 1\u20132 warnings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
