Many of us de\u00adcide on a course around our 20s and never ac\u00adtually re\u00adas\u00adsess and re\u00addi\u00adrect it but just keep drif\u00adting in that di\u00adrec\u00adtion un\u00adtil so\u00adme\u00adthing \u2013 like mo\u00adther\u00adhood or burn out \u2013 be\u00adco\u00admes our wake-up call. For many this cross\u00adroad feels over\u00adwhel\u00adming and even scary but it\u2019s ac\u00adtually an ama\u00adzing op\u00adpor\u00adtu\u00adnity to re\u00adcon\u00adnect and do some self-work to un\u00adder\u00adstand of our va\u00adlues and boun\u00adda\u00adries may have shifted over time. That\u2019s where a lot of wo\u00admen come to the con\u00adclu\u00adsion that their pre\u00advious work si\u00adtua\u00adtion does not win in the \u201ctrade-off\u201d as\u00adsess\u00adment. &nbsp;It\u2019s not so much that wo\u00admen are no lon\u00adger in\u00adte\u00adres\u00adted in their work or career but if they are to leave the child\u00adren with so\u00admeone else in fa\u00advour of go\u00ading to work then they will of\u00adten have hig\u00adher ex\u00adpec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adons towards their work. Na\u00admely wan\u00adting more pur\u00adpose, op\u00adpor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties, and re\u00adco\u00adgni\u00adtion or a more fle\u00adxi\u00adble and un\u00adder\u00adstan\u00adding cul\u00adture and en\u00advi\u00adron\u00adment. They just won\u2019t put up with the same stuff if they do so at the cost of miss\u00ading on their children\u2019s child\u00adhood. There is ac\u00adtually a lot of em\u00adpowerm\u00adents co\u00adming from this as many wo\u00admen then be\u00adco\u00adming much stron\u00adger ad\u00advo\u00adca\u00adtes for them\u00adsel\u00adves and that\u2019s ab\u00adso\u00adlut\u00adely amazing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip: Take time to as\u00adsess your va\u00adlue and needs prior\/ du\u00adring ma\u00adte\u00adr\u00adnity and make sure you set up your sur\u00adroun\u00addings accordingly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Which in\u00addi\u00adca\u00adtors do you think wo\u00admen should look for to as\u00adsess whe\u00adther it is \u201cjust the hor\u00admo\u00adnes\u201d as many peo\u00adple say af\u00adter birth or whe\u00adther they ac\u00adtually needs a change?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most im\u00adportantly, I think this has to do with be\u00ading in touch with and lis\u00adtening to on\u00ades\u00adelf and when you rea\u00adlise that you are not en\u00adjoy\u00ading work nor pa\u00adren\u00adthood de\u00adspite re\u00adally wan\u00adting it. There are ups and downs but if it is not ba\u00adlan\u00adced over a lon\u00adger pe\u00adriod, that is your in\u00addi\u00adca\u00adtor. For ex\u00adam\u00adple, there are al\u00adways si\u00adtua\u00adtions at work when you need to put in more hours, have an im\u00adportant dead\u00adline, etc. You can re\u00adba\u00adlance and com\u00adpen\u00adsate that in the right en\u00advi\u00adron\u00adment. If not, you will have a con\u00adstant fee\u00adling of guilt. Where you will not be able to live up to your own ex\u00adpec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adons towards an\u00adyone, also not yours\u00adelf. A good test whe\u00adther you should make ch\u00adan\u00adges is to set clear boun\u00adda\u00adries and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcate those ac\u00adcor\u00addin\u00adgly. If your em\u00adployer is not able or not wil\u00adling to sup\u00adport this, then chan\u00adces that you will be able to find yours\u00adelf and find your ba\u00adlance bet\u00adween work and fa\u00admily is much lower. In the long run, this can be da\u00adma\u00adgeable to ever\u00adyone, and this is what I be\u00adlieve is the first red flag that so\u00adme\u00adthing may need to change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip: As\u00adsess\u00adment of your cur\u00adrent work\/life si\u00adtua\u00adtion. Are you happy (more of\u00adten than not) at home and at work? If the ans\u00adwer is no: start thin\u00adking about what needs to change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You men\u00adtion on your web\u00adsite that a lot of wo\u00admen go th\u00adrough a \u201cLoss of per\u00adso\u00adnal iden\u00adtity\u201d when be\u00adco\u00adming mo\u00adther. What does it mean and what can we do about&nbsp;it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mo\u00adther\u00adhood forces us to go get ac\u00adquain\u00adted with our\u00adsel\u00adves again as it ch\u00adan\u00adges so many things. I per\u00adso\u00adnally wan\u00adted to stay at home lon\u00adger than th\u00adree months and I took that time. And de\u00adspite wan\u00adting that, I found it dif\u00adfi\u00adcult when I rea\u00adli\u00adsed that I missed ha\u00adving dis\u00adcus\u00adsions, in\u00adter\u00adac\u00adtions, and the lear\u00adning op\u00adpor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties found in the work\u00adplace and peo\u00adple in\u00adter\u00adac\u00adtions. There I lost a bit the fee\u00adling for who I was. I think it would have hel\u00adped tre\u00admen\u00addously if I knew about it be\u00adfore and could have pre\u00adpared for it. Even if you are not em\u00adployed any\u00admore, it does not mean that this part of you is fully gone. My sug\u00adges\u00adtion is to make a plan to meet your needs for re\u00adco\u00adgni\u00adtion, be\u00ading seen, be\u00ading chal\u00adlen\u00adged. These needs are su\u00adper dif\u00adfe\u00adrent for every per\u00adson, I per\u00adso\u00adnally got in\u00advol\u00adved into vol\u00adun\u00adtee\u00adring du\u00adring the re\u00adfu\u00adgee cri\u00adsis and got star\u00adted with stu\u00addy\u00ading and pre\u00adpa\u00adring for my shift towards ha\u00adving my own con\u00adsul\u00adting busi\u00adness. Th\u00adrough my work with many wo\u00admen, I ob\u00adser\u00adved that for many, \u201cjust\u201d be\u00ading a mom was not an op\u00adtion as they quickly be\u00adcame un\u00adsa\u00adtis\u00adfied. It\u2019s not that they don\u2019t love their child\u00adren \u2013 it\u2019s just not he\u00adalthy for an\u00adyone to com\u00adple\u00adtely dis\u00adre\u00adgard their own needs and for wo\u00admen for whom career is im\u00adportant or re\u00admai\u00adning in\u00adtellec\u00adtually ac\u00adtive and en\u00adga\u00adged, that needs to re\u00admain a non-nego\u00adtia\u00adble and then it\u2019s about ba\u00adlan\u00adcing everyone\u2019s needs and this can take a bit of out-of-the-box thin\u00adking and most im\u00adportantly sup\u00adport from both the spouse and the employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip: Stay true to yours\u00adelf and make sure your most im\u00adportant needs re\u00admain sa\u00adtis\u00adfied (e.g. re\u00adco\u00adgni\u00adtion, be\u00ading seen, be\u00ading chal\u00adlen\u00adged, lear\u00adning) and put a sys\u00adtem in place that al\u00adlows you to get those eneeds co\u00advered (e.g. vol\u00adun\u00adteer work, en\u00adtre\u00adpre\u00adneu\u00adrial pro\u00adject, new hobbies,&nbsp;\u2026)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Branding is&nbsp;key<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How are you hel\u00adping your cli\u00adents who come back from a lon\u00adger pe\u00adriod of time at&nbsp;home?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, it is im\u00adportant to keep in mind that wo\u00admen don\u2019t have to brand them\u00adsel\u00adves so\u00adlely as stay-at-home-mom. Their pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal iden\u00adtity from be\u00adfore mo\u00adther\u00adhood is not lost just be\u00adcause they are not curr\u00adently em\u00adployed. When peo\u00adple re\u00adtire, we say if they that they are a re\u00adti\u00adred La\u00adwyer or Den\u00adtist. That\u2019s still part of their iden\u00adtity and skills even if they are not ac\u00adtively prac\u00adti\u00adcing or using those skills. For moms at home who find it dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to be away from the work\u00adplace and from their pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal iden\u00adtity, I re\u00adcom\u00admend fin\u00adding ways to stay in the loop by go\u00ading to con\u00adfe\u00adren\u00adces or net\u00adwor\u00adking events you are in\u00adte\u00adres\u00adted in. And no, there is no need to pre\u00adsent yours\u00adelf as \u201coh I am curr\u00adently not do\u00ading any\u00adthing, I am home with the kids\u201d. If you want to pre\u00adsent, yours\u00adelf as stay-at-home-mom that is to\u00adtally fine. Do it with pride. If you feel like this is only a part of yours\u00adelf then pre\u00adsent, yours\u00adelf using both your pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal ex\u00adper\u00adtise or title as well as men\u00adtio\u00adning your cur\u00adrent si\u00adtua\u00adtion as stay at home mom. You are both even if you are not do\u00ading both at the same time. Part of the new iden\u00adtity as a mom is to learn to be\u00adcome both and to ac\u00adcept that one does not need to ex\u00adclude the other.&nbsp; This brings us back to the per\u00adcei\u00adved iden\u00adtity loss. In fact, it\u2019s not lost, it\u2019s new and ex\u00adpan\u00added! Many wo\u00admen feel they can only be one or the other \u2013 but&nbsp;why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brin\u00adging the pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal to\u00adpic even when be\u00ading at home with the child\u00adren can be a stra\u00adte\u00adgic move. That\u2019s a good way to start the con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion about your next steps and re\u00adturn to work, espe\u00adci\u00adally if peo\u00adple ask you ques\u00adti\u00adons about your cur\u00adrent em\u00adployer. You can even use it as an ope\u00adner \u201coh good ques\u00adtion, I am loo\u00adking for my next per\u00adfect fit, have you he\u00adard of any ope\u00adnings that I should put my name in for?\u201d. Al\u00adways re\u00admem\u00adber that even if you are on sab\u00adba\u00adti\u00adcal, at home, or wha\u00adte\u00adver break you are ta\u00adking from your pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal career, it does not ch\u00adange your skill set. The ex\u00adpe\u00adri\u00adence you have, the skills you de\u00adve\u00adlo\u00adped and the tool box you ac\u00adqui\u00adred along the way, it is not gone. The first mind\u00adset shift when co\u00adming back from a lon\u00adger pe\u00adriod off work is to en\u00adsure that we build the con\u00adfi\u00addence to give our pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal skills the re\u00adco\u00adgni\u00adtion they de\u00adserve and that\u2019s bran\u00adding. There is no need to brand yours\u00adelf as \u201cstay at home mom\u201d, it might be the cur\u00adrent sche\u00addule, but it does not de\u00adscribe who you are in the pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal&nbsp;world.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip: Stay ac\u00adtive du\u00adring your time at home, eit\u00adher in your cur\u00adrent net\u00adwork (con\u00adfe\u00adren\u00adces, ape\u00adros, etc) or wi\u00adthin new net\u00adworks (play\u00adgrounds, kid groups, etc.) and be proud of your cur\u00adrent \u201cwork\u201d. You are ad\u00adding a new hu\u00adman be\u00ading to our so\u00adciety and the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfore sha\u00adping our tomorrow.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Next to bran\u00adding, what are your tips for job hunting?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that there are two chan\u00adnels for job hun\u00adting \u2013 the jobs that are pu\u00adblished and those that are be\u00ading fil\u00adled th\u00adrough net\u00adwork or so-cal\u00adled hid\u00adden jobs. It is a bit more dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to get ac\u00adcess to the la\u00adter when you are co\u00adming out of a lon\u00adger break and were not ac\u00adtively nur\u00adture or de\u00adve\u00adlo\u00adping your net\u00adwork. You can re\u00adac\u00adti\u00advate and build it but it re\u00adqui\u00adres ef\u00adforts and also a cer\u00adtain to\u00adle\u00adrance for frus\u00adtra\u00adtion. For the ac\u00adtive job mar\u00adket, keep in mind that a lot of hi\u00adring is be\u00ading done with the help of soft\u00adware, cal\u00adled ATS \u2013 Ap\u00adpli\u00adcant Track\u00ading Sys\u00adtem which is ba\u00adsi\u00adcally con\u00adver\u00adting the in\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion from your CV into a searcha\u00adble da\u00adta\u00adbase. So, when a job is very com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtive any\u00adthing that stand\u00adouts from the norm such as lon\u00adger breaks, career shifts, dif\u00adfe\u00adrent po\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons and in\u00addus\u00adtries will be con\u00adside\u00adred as di\u00ads\u00adad\u00advan\u00adtage in com\u00adpa\u00adri\u00adson to other ap\u00adpli\u00adcants. In this con\u00adtext, on\u00adline ap\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons are much less li\u00adkely to work af\u00adter a career break and this is why net\u00adwor\u00adking is so im\u00adportant as it al\u00adlows you to en\u00adter com\u00adpa\u00adnies and ac\u00adcess job leads wi\u00adt\u00adhout ha\u00adving to go th\u00adrough a sys\u00adtem that we know will not be fri\u00adendly to pro\u00adfiles in\u00adclu\u00adding a career break. Also, it\u2019s good to keep in mind what could be an employer\u2019s con\u00adcern with can\u00addi\u00adda\u00adtes re\u00adtur\u00adning to work \u2013 lon\u00adger lear\u00adning curve, be\u00ading with new tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies and soft\u00adware, etc.). My ad\u00advice is to take it on you to an\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpate AND di\u00ads\u00adarm such con\u00adcerns but dis\u00adcus\u00adsing them openly and show\u00ading how you\u2019ve pre\u00adpared for it. What\u2019s also very im\u00adportant and an\u00ado\u00adther key ele\u00adment of bran\u00adding is to ar\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlate what you bring to the ta\u00adble and how you can add va\u00adlue to a role how. Most im\u00adportantly, the CV needs to cle\u00adarly con\u00advey the brand and for this to hap\u00adpen, the can\u00addi\u00addate for needs to do the self-ex\u00adplo\u00adra\u00adtory jour\u00adney to un\u00adder\u00adstand her strengths and skills. For a start, there should al\u00adways be a po\u00adsi\u00adtio\u00adning line that cle\u00adarly tells the rea\u00adder what your ex\u00adper\u00adtise is and will make it clear what kind of role you would be a good fit for. This is not an \u201cOb\u00adjec\u00adtive\u201d sec\u00adtion which is out\u00adda\u00adted but ra\u00adther a head\u00adline along the li\u00adnes of what you see on Lin\u00adke\u00addIn just be\u00adlow your name. This is cri\u00adti\u00adcal as it al\u00adlows you to take con\u00adtrol over the first im\u00adpres\u00adsion you make and over your bran\u00adding when it co\u00admes to the ex\u00adper\u00adtise and po\u00adsi\u00adtion you want to be known for \u2013 AND gi\u00adves your net\u00adwork the gui\u00addance to con\u00adnect you with the cor\u00adrect job leads.
